The Best Tasting Protein Bars

If you’re serious about gaining muscle or maintaining muscle while you shed any extra pounds, you need to maintain an adequate protein intake. We’re talking serious numbers here–think at least one gram if not 1.5 grams per pound of lean body mass. You can get there with regular food, but protein bars make the whole thing easier.

Unfortunately, protein bars and good taste don’t always go together, and who wants to deal with a synthetic tasting bar that feels like biting into a rubber tire just to get an extra 20 grams of protein in? No one. The good news is, in 2020, there are many excellent tasting protein bars that still provide ample protein intake per calorie. Here are our favorites.

TOP PICK: Power Crunch Protein Energy, Peanut Butter Fudge Bar

The best flavor of the tastiest bar on the market, the Power Crunch Protein Energy bars don’t pack the most bang per calorie, weighing in at 16 calories per gram of protein (a good target is 10-12), but the crispy wafer, delicious peanut butter fudge filling, and yummy chocolate exterior make this bar, in our opinion, hands down the tastiest protein bar money can buy. The other flavors are incredible as well, but this round up would be quite boring if we listed them all out–they’d occupy all the spots in the article!

Key Nutritional Specs

  • 13g of protein
  • 215 calories
  • 7g saturated fats
  • 5g sugar

RUNNER UP: ONE Protein Bars, Birthday Cake Gluten Free Protein Bars

They aren’t Power Crunch, but ONE protein bars pack nearly 1 gram of protein per only 10 calories, have almost no sugar (1 gram / bar) and taste delicious. If you are on a diet or weight cut and need more efficiency per calorie out of your protein bars, ONE protein are the best option taste wise. We’re partial to the birthday cake flavor, one of their most popular, but Peanut Butter Cup and Maple Glazed Doughnut also do the trick.

With only 1 gram of sugar and a high protein content, the ONE protein bars do need to resort to a little more artificial flavoring and the stereotypical protein bar texture, but they do such a good job with the flavors that it doesn’t detract too much from the overall experience.

Key Nutritional Specs

  • 20g of protein
  • 210 calories
  • 1g sugar
  • 5g saturated fat

BEST SNICKERS STYLE: FITCRUNCH Snack Size Protein Bars, Caramel Peanut Flavor

Weighing in at 190 calories with 16 grams of protein, FITCRUNCH make, by far, in our opinion, the best “Snickers style” protein bars available. If you want the gooey interior, nougat texture with a crunchy exterior epitomized by the Snickers bars, FITCRUNCH are the way to go.

They’re a solid protein bar with minimal sugar content, decent protein / calorie ratio and no trans fats. They also have a great flavor options–we like the caramel peanut flavor–the truest to the candy bars it tries to emulate, but the chocolate peanut butter is a delicious option as well.

Key Nutritional Specs

  • 16g of protein
  • 190 calories
  • 3g sugar
  • 4g saturated fat

EFFICIENCY AND TASTE: Muscle Pharm Combat Crunch Caramel Candy Bar

With similar nutritional specs to the ONE protein bar but with more of a crunchy texture, the MP Combat Crunch bars are another top contender when it comes to taste. It does have a little more sugar and saturated fat than the competition; however, we often like that because it usually means better taste!

We like the caramel candy option–you’ll find generally speaking, caramel and peanut butter make for the best protein bar flavors. This is because certain natural flavors are more easily packed into a protein bar while still being able to maintain the bars’ nutritional value.

Key Nutritional Specs

  • 20g of protein
  • 210 calories
  • 6g of sugar
  • 6g saturated fat

BEST VEGAN PROTEIN BAR: No Cow Protein Bars, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip

A relatively new entrant to the protein bar scene–since 2014– No Cow has become a mainstay vegan protein bar option, and a good one at that. Vegan protein bar protein usually consists of brown rice and peas (the No Cow bar is no exception) which have a bit more of an unpleasant taste than whey; however, No Cow does a great job masking this difference with delicious and surprisingly still vegan flavors.

We like the peanut butter chocolate chip–as we mentioned previously, peanut butter works well within the nutritional constraints of a protein bar, but the carrot cake option is surprisingly decent.

At the end of the day, Vegan bars aren’t as tasty as non-vegan options, but the good ones, like No Cow can come pretty close.
